In 1985 richtte Tipper Gore (mevrouw Al Gore) samen met drie andere Washington wives het Parents Music Resource Center op, omdat ze geschokt was door de expliciete songtekst van het nummer 'Darling Nikki' van Prince. De ondubbelzinnige verwijzingen naar seks en geweld in de muziek van de jaren tachtig waren volgens het PMRC een 'angstaanjagende aanval op de familiewaarden'. Hun gelobby leidde onder andere tot waarschuwingslabels op platenhoezen.
